Free COVID tests still available from US government: How to apply to get yours

After it was reported the Trump administration would be ending the free COVID test program, the Department of Health confirmed it will continue for now.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ free COVID-19 test distribution program has allowed millions of households to get tests, delivered by mail, for the past several years. But a new report suggests you may want to act soon, if you plan to order tests in this latest round of availability.

The Washington Post reported Tuesday night that the Trump administration was preparing to cease the program’s operations, potentially destroying tens of millions of tests.

The Post shared a statement from Andrew Nixon, Department of Health and Human Services spokesman, confirming that the website would be shut down at 8 p.m. EST on Feb. 18.

However, shortly before 8 p.m., The Post reported it received a new statement from Nixon, who said, “With COVID-19 infections decreasing after a winter peak, we are in the process of regular discussions on closing this round of the COVID-19 test ordering program. At this point, the program is still open, and we will share additional updates as needed.”

As of Feb. 19, the covidtests.gov website is still live, and tests can be ordered on the U.S. Postal Service’s website.

All you have to do is submit your name and mailing address. You also have the option to submit your email to receive tracking updates.

If you already ordered four tests since the program re-launched in September 2024, you’re not currently eligible for more free at-home tests from the federal program.

Free COVID-19 tests sent by the federal government may have a date printed on the box that has passed, but the FDA extended the shelf life of these tests so they may not necessarily be expired.

The FDA has a table on their website for you to check the tests you have. Click here to see all expiration date extensions.
