Appendix cancer rates surge among Gen X and millennials

Appendix cancer rates have tripled for Gen X and quadrupled for millennials, new study reveals.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Appendix cancer is extremely rare but it’s rising fast among younger adults, according to new research reviewed by NBC News.

A new study finds rates of appendix cancer have tripled for Generation X and quadrupled for millennials. That’s based on national data from 1975 to 2019.

One in three appendix cancer cases is now diagnosed in people under age 50. That’s much higher than what’s seen with other gastrointestinal cancers, according to the study.

Doctors who reviewed the data said the cause is unclear but it could be linked to environmental changes, lifestyle, or diet over the last few generations.

Appendix cancer is hard to detect. Most cases aren’t found until after someone has their appendix removed for appendicitis.

That means many are diagnosed at a later stage with a worse outcome.

Doctors said persistent symptoms such as like pain, fatigue, or weight loss should never be ignored. Experts said this is especially true for younger people. As always, early action could make a big difference, doctors said.
