Asheville intercity bus routes resumes, connecting rural areas to rest of state
This bus service will see Asheville again after its last stop in the city was swept away.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Greyhound will resume service to and from Asheville after nearly a yearlong closure due to its former stop, a gas station, being destroyed by Hurricane Helene, the Department of Transportation confirms.
The stop connects Asheville to Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Chapel Hill and Raleigh, which then connects it to destinations up and down the east coast like New York City, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Greenville, S.C. and Richmond and Norfolk, V.A.
“Restoring service to Asheville has been a top priority,” Brennon Fuqua, director of NCDOT’s Integrated Mobility Division, said. “This is not just about getting buses back on the road. It’s about ensuring residents have reliable, affordable transportation to access not only our great state but also the nation. Access to transportation is access to opportunity.”
Reopening the Asheville bus stop took months of coordinating between the Integrated Mobility Division, the city of Asheville and Greyhound.
The Department of Transportation uses federal and state funds to contract Greyhound for the statewide bus service.
Asheville will be added to two routes: the Cardinal Flyer and the Piedmont Pass.
The Cardinal Flyer connects Asheville to Hickory/Newton, Statesville, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Chapel Hill and Raleigh.
The Piedmont Pass connects Asheville to Forest City, Gastonia, Shelby, Charlotte, Albemarle, Southern Pines, Sanford and Raleigh.
“Intercity bus travel is a lifeline for so many people in this region — providing an affordable way to visit family and access jobs and healthcare across North Carolina and beyond,” Greyhound Chief Operating Officer Rodney Surber said.
Greyhound will pick up and drop off passengers on Ashland Avenue outside of the downtown Asheville Rides Transit (ART) Transit Station. Tickets can be purchased on its website or mobile app.
