ELGIN, S.C. — The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a Magnitude 2.3 earthquake at 1:16 a.m. Thursday, April 24, near the Elgin community in Kershaw County. 

The epicenter was located 6 kilometers (3.73 miles) east of Elgin at coordinates 34.151 degrees north, 80.728 degrees west. This puts it very near Interstate 20, between Elgin and Lugoff, at a depth of 2.4 kilometers (1.49 miles). According to USGS, 95 people reported feeling the earthquake on Thursday morning.

This is the sixth recorded earthquake in South Carolina since the beginning of the year. Four of the six earthquakes have occurred in the same area around Elgin; the other two occurred in Salem and near Jenkinsville.
