Firefighters rescue over 30 people during flash flood emergency, officials say

Emergency crews responded to over 50 flood-related calls across Charlotte during Thursday night’s downpours.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Over 30 people were rescued by firefighters during a flash flood emergency as heavy rains impacted the Charlotte area Thursday evening, officials said.

Charlotte Fire crews responded to more than 50 flood-related calls across Charlotte during the storms, which caused flash flooding in several neighborhoods, especially near creeks and streams.

Multiple crews responded to an emergency near Freedom Park. As water quickly filled the area, 13 people were rescued from hazardous conditions. Crews used inflatable boats to reach those in need and get them to higher ground.

Another major operation happened along John Price Road in Steele Creek. At least four crews evacuated around 20 people from rising floodwaters in a neighborhood. Charlotte Fire said the crews used specialized techniques to protect lives and ensure those individuals were safely removed from flooded homes.

“This is why we train,” Chief Reginald Johnson said. “When the water rises and seconds matter, Charlotte Fire stands ready to respond. The heroic actions of our crews last night reflect their commitment to protecting this community, no matter the conditions.”

The flood threat is expected to linger through Friday night, as more showers and storms are possible in Charlotte.
