Lincoln County confirms second case of rabies after fox attacks human

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — Lincoln County officials confirmed the county’s case of rabies in 2025 after a fox tried to attack someone this week.

Lincoln County Animal Services said the fox acted aggressively and attempted to bite a person on Walker Road on Feb. 10. The fox was sent to the state lab for testing, which came back positive for rabies on Thursday. The first case of rabies was detected in a raccoon in early January.

“We recommend all pet owners to ensure their indoor and outdoor animals are kept current on their rabies vaccine and take advantage of vaccination opportunities through Lincoln County Animal Services,” the agency said in a statement.

Lincoln County residents can get a one-year vaccination for their pets through the county for just $7 per animal.

Signs of rabies in wild animals include abnormal aggression, disorientation, wobbliness, circling and excessive salivation. Anyone who sees or encounters an animal that may be sick or is showing signs of rabies should call Lincoln County Animal Services at 704-736-4125 to report it.
