Active wildfire in Wilkes County



The wildfire is located on the mountainside of Old Highway 16 near the Wilkes and Ashe County line.

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — UPDATE (Sunday 10 p.m.): The fire is now 90% contained, according to the North Carolina Forest Service.

There is an active wildfire in Wilkes County, according to Wilkes County EMS. 

The wildfire is located on the mountainside of Old Highway 16 near the Wilkes and Ashe County line. 

The North Carolina Forestry Service, Wilbar Fire Department, Wilkes County FAST Team, Wilkes County EMS, and Wilkes County Emergency Management are responding to the wildfire. 

Officials say crews are battling high winds and low humidity. There may be large amounts of smoke in the region from the wildfire.

According to the North Carolina Forest Service, the fire is about 250 acres and is 50% contained, as of 3 p.m. Sunday.

North Carolina is under a statewide burn ban.

At 4:56 am Saturday, Wilbar personnel along with NC Forest Service were dispatched to a woods fire along Old 16.
