Citywide burn ban issued in Charlotte amid elevated fire danger

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Fire Marshal’s Office issued a citywide burn ban in coordination with state officials amid an elevated fire danger across the Carolinas.

“While the state’s burn ban restricts open burning across all 100 counties, it does not cover fires within 100 feet of occupied dwellings,” Fire Marshal Kevin Millers said. “Given the increased risk of fire, we are extending those restrictions locally to ensure consistency and safety across our community.”

In addition to new restrictions, the statewide burn ban cancels all existing burning permits. Under state law, anyone who violates the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 in court costs. Individuals found responsible for setting fires may be held liable for expenses related to extinguishing them.

All burn bans will remain in effect until further notice.
