Match workouts to personality for better results, study finds
If your workouts just aren’t sticking this summer, your personality might be the reason why.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Trying to stick to a workout routine but keep falling off track? It might have less to do with willpower and more to do with who you are.
A new study finds that personality traits can affect how much you enjoy exercise and how well it works for you.
Researchers looked at the “Big Five” traits: Extroversion, conscientiousness, openness, agreeableness, and neuroticism.
Extroverts liked intense workouts — but didn’t always stick with them.
Conscientious people did best with structured, goal-based routines.
Those high in neuroticism, who are often anxious or moody, preferred low-intensity, solo workouts at home. They were also the only group to report lower stress after the program.
Experts say the key is matching your workouts to your personality.
That makes it easier to stay consistent and enjoy it more.
