NC attorney general to tour Helene damage in Boone

Attorney General Jeff Jackson says his office has received tips of price gouging and contractor fraud in western North Carolina in the wake of Helene.

WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — Attorney General Jeff Jackson will visit Boone on Tuesday for a joint news conference with law enforcement officials warning residents in western North Carolina to be wary of scams and fraud as they rebuild after Hurricane Helene.

Jackson is scheduled to speak at noon. His remarks will be streamed live on WCNC+ and the WCNC Charlotte mobile app. Jackson will be joined by NCSBI Director Chip Haley and Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman for the news conference.

State officials said at the time they’d received tips of contractor scams and reports of people impersonating FEMA officials. Jackson said his office was investigating claims that those people were giving unfair price quotes to homeowners.

The attorney general also reminded business owners to stay vigilant of scammers, saying if something feels a little wrong, it probably is.
