Potentially toxic algae found in Lake Norman: How to stay safe | VERIFY
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As residents and visitors prepare to celebrate the July Fourth holiday weekend on the water, officials are urging caution due to an ongoing algal bloom in Lake Norman.
Health experts are advising the public to avoid areas where the lake water appears green or blue—a sign of potentially harmful algal blooms that have been present since June 16. The blooms have been identified in multiple locations across Catawba, Iredell, Lincoln and Mecklenburg counties.
Algal blooms can look like spilled paint, foam or scum floating on the water’s surface. The discoloration may shift in hue and texture, characteristics often associated with harmful algae. According to NOAA, algal blooms can last from several months to a full year, depending on environmental conditions.
