Asheville revising Helene recovery plan after HUD rejection

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The city of Asheville has been forced to revise its Helene recovery plan after the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary, Scott Turner, rejected the initial proposal due to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) criteria.
The first draft of the plan stated the city would prioritize relief funding for minority and women-owned businesses.
“Once again, let me be clear DEI is dead at HUD,” Turner said in a news release. “We will not provide funding to any program or grantee that does not comply with President Trump’s executive orders.”
Turner referred to Asheville’s original plan to prioritize certain impacted residents “unacceptable.”
Turner said the city assured him it would update the draft action plan to comply.
