Severe weather threat impacts some flights at Charlotte airport

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Some travelers at Charlotte’s airport are facing flight delays and cancellations as a severe weather system pushes into the area early Sunday morning with the threat of heavy rain, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.
WCNC Charlotte’s Julie Kay is at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport to track the impacts throughout the morning on Sunday.
As of 8 a.m., there were a total of 62 flight delays in and out of the Charlotte airport and 61 flights were canceled.
Travelers at the airport were expressing their frustration with the weather, as some people said they were stuck at the airport until further notice with few flights available due to the storms. One passenger told WCNC Charlotte they were stranded at multiple airports. A man trying to get to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, said he was anticipating being stranded at Charlotte Douglas for at least 12 hours.
A spokesperson for American Airlines said the delays and cancellations at the Charlotte airport are a result of the weather impacts.
“It’s going to be a rough day on the East Coast,” the spokesperson said.
